About the book

Many authors consider joining forces with other writers to multiply their creative might. Are you:

  • Wondering what the different co-author models are and how they fit your writing and publishing goals?
  • Curious about the benefits and challenges of co-authoring?
  • Confused about what working agreements will protect your interests?
  • Wanting to keep conflict between the book pages and not between you and your co-authors?

We can help.

Three career authors, with experience in the different models of co-authoring, coach you through all the areas you should consider whether you are following a traditional, indie or hybrid publishing path. From the creative challenges of co-authoring, to benefits of a shared marketing push—learn how to unlock the potential of powerful collaborative relationships.

Whether you are developing a book or a series, Create With Co-Authors gives you the tools and step-by-step guidance you need to form healthy co-author relationships. Prompts and exercises will help you take practical steps to turn that dream into shared products that you can research, write and promote—while growing your catalogue and widening your reach.

This is the sixth Creative Academy Guide for Writers. Be sure to check out the rest of the titles in this series.

Free Resources from Create With

Co-Authors by Donna Barker, Crystal Hunt and Eileen Cook

What’s included in the resources package?

Create with Co-Authors “Your Turn” Workbook (Google Doc)

We have collected up ALL the Your Turn exercises from the book and turned it into a 42 page, digital, fillable workbook which we are providing to you for free to help make it easier to answer all the questions, and to work through some of the section content that will help you to fill out your official business plan. You can use this as a Google Doc, or download it / open it with Word or Pages or any other word processing program.

Sample Progress Review Template (Google Doc)

Checking in on a regular basis with your publishing business, like glancing down at a map as your travel, ensures that you’re still on track for your end goal. This Google Doc is a list that can give you a way to structure your meetings so you’re certain not to miss anything, but feel free to add/delete /or modify as needed. Be certain to take notes of any decisions or discussions so you can reference them later.

Shared Writing World Questionnaire (Google Doc)

Even if you and one co-author are writing your first book together, you’re writing in a shared world. To help you get off on the right foot, we brainstormed a list of story questions to consider and put them in this Google Doc.

Working Agreement Questions (Worksheet)

Strong working agreements also generally include several other “legalese”-type clauses that cover what happens if someone dies, what happens when dealing with agents or other parties, and anything else that may be specific to your country’s laws, the subject of your book, or your personal situation. This worksheet will give you a starting place for those questions. Even if you use a lawyer-approved template to generate a working agreement, it’s always a good idea to have a lawyer review your specific contracts.

Writer’s Self Evaluation

If you’re ready to evaluate where your skills are at and focus in on where you need to level up, and where you “got this” then this is the word doc for you. You can download it, and print it or completed it digitally.
